I am writing to express my support for Elizabeth Barron for Newport School Committee.
Liz and I have a lot in common: we have both lived in Newport for more than 10 years, have backgrounds in education, and have children in the city’s public schools. Because I know Liz well, I trust that she has the capacity, energy and integrity to advance our school system for the sake of our children and their wonderful educators.
Liz has always been passionate about her work, whether helping students with their mental health, behavioral and academic needs, or supporting teachers and schools. She also recognizes the value that multilingual education brings to our entire community. Learning another language enriches individuals and connects communities.
We have attended School Committee meetings together, where I have witnessed her advocacy firsthand. Liz understands that multilingual education isn’t simply about helping students learn English; it’s about creating opportunities for all students to learn from one another. Equally important, Liz knows when to step aside and make space for Hispanic community members to speak for themselves. She knows how to listen.
I know Liz will listen to students, families, educators and community members, and use her expertise to improve our schools while working collaboratively with her colleagues. She has my strong support on Nov. 3. I hope you will join me in voting for Barron for School Committee.
